The Lake Nyos disaster occurred on August 21, 1986, when a massive cloud of carbon dioxide gas erupted from Lake Nyos, a volcanic crater lake in Cameroon. This rare phenomenon, known as a limnic eruption, released approximately 1.6 million tons of CO2 that raced towards nearby villages.
